Untitled Project: Ghost Comic

2020

I came up with the concept for this untitled comic in 2018, but it stayed fragmented in my notes app until 2020, when I brought it to life. Please enjoy!

  • Comic page one. Two speech bubbles read "i'm not sure when i started being a ghost" and "it's pretty much all i can remember." There is a starry backdrop changing from black to light gray.
  • Comic page two. Two conjoined speech bubbles read "it's pretty cool ... being a ghost, i mean." It goes on, "i can change into whatever shape i want, as long as i take up the same amount of space." Four small drawings follow, which are captioned as and described by the following: "classic ghost! really big cat! can of beans! human!"
  • Comic page three. Two panels with a black background and white illustrations. The first shows the ghost in human form in the driver's seat of a wrecked car, beeping the horn and saying "awww yisssssssss." It reads, "i can only interact with other ghost things, though. like ghost cars—cars that were wrecked..." The second panel shows the ghost reading a book underwater on a sunken ship. A fish looks on quizzically. It reads, "or ghost books..."
  • Comic page four. A full page illustration of the ghost comforting the ghost of a recently killed deer at night in the forest, saying "shhhh it's okay you're gonna be safe now." The page reads, "or ghost animals."
  • Comic page five. The ghost is sitting on a park bench at sunset by some birds. Two speech bubbles read, "i've never been able to find anyone like me. i don't know why, but it's not for lack of trying."
  • Comic page six. Three speech bubbles say, "oh! so, uh, when i said i couldn't interact with anything non-ghost before, i forgot to mention max. max is someone i met. they can see me, when all everyone else sees is a blur in the air." Underneath is a small drawing of the ghost (labelled "me") high-fiving Max (labelled "max on scooter") as they drive by on a scooter. It says, "they can touch me, too." Max is a gender neutral person with long hair, a helmet, a t-shirt, cargo shorts, and a backpack.
  • Comic page seven. A drawing of Max doing homework in their bedroom. The desk is a bit messy and a plant is wilted. Two speech bubbles say, "max is usually working super hard on school and things, but i don't think they're doing very well. they don't really have friends over, and sometimes they don't get out of bed or take care of themself."
  • Comic page eight. Several panels show the ghost cooking, the ghost hugging a crying Max, the ghost and Max eating popcorn and watching tv on the couch, and Max wearing headphones on the subway while holding the ghost's hand. Two speech bubbles say, "but since i met max, they've said i help them a lot. plus i'm soft and squishy, which is good for banishing sadness."
  • Comic page nine. A small drawing in the middle of the ghost throwing a blanket over a sleeping Max. There is a white cloud around them, and a black background behind it. The page reads, "i'm not sure why i exist yet but i think i might be here for people like max. i'll have to wait and see what happens, but... for now, this is good."
